To quote the owner when he got sick of consultants squawking about the issue like parrots "either write me a check, tell me who to lay off so I can make your job easier, or open your own business and run it like you want".Ĭorporate production doesn't always revolve around the contrived obsolescence that keep revenue streams fluid in the IT economy. Last time I dealt with an app that was using Win95 and custom controllers the price tag to move onto the new platform was $350,000, and the new platform required a lot more physical maintenance. So, not only do they get grief from their real life job having to support this stuff they get treated with a condescending response on SW. I'd be willing to bet 99% of the posters having to deal with legacy NT4, Win2K, 2003 servers running Citrix, and that rare DOS or Win98 app which we get now and then are well aware of it's age, but don't have a choice but to support it due to application or hardware requirements. So, for us not to trash this topic with unwanted posts, I invite you to a polite and professional discussion about our dissagreement in private messaging. Even if OP is installing a old computer in his LAB just for shits and giggles and knowledge, who are we to deprive him about learning? ) I would imagine if your post would be "Windows98 isįinicky about USB drivers, have you tried to use PS2 mouse and keyboard to rule out any other OS problems?". You should be using a more modern OS at this point and you won't deal with these issues."? So if you get where OP is comming from, why did you even post: Well, I was thought on here to politelly remind people to not stear the conversation off the topic and if you give advice, you should always give the advice for question it was asked, as noone would want to read trough 100posts of "you should not be usint this" or "why do you even want to use it", etc. If I ask someone "hey, I need to know why this picture is yellow", I don't need someone who would answer "you shouldn't use this old powerstrip, you buy another and simply plug it in"

It certainly didn't help OP.Īlso, I have been places that have to run antiquated equipment because there is some "Critical" software or hardware that won't run on anything newer, so I get where OP is likely coming from.

Please tell me how your post added ANYTHING to the conversation other than criticism of my post.

See the part about the driver issues with 98 and usb devices. Really? My post had information to back up why I said move to a more modern OS. It's easy to write "you shouldn't use it", but most of the time people need to use them and giving advice in the form of " you should be using a more modern OS" has no value. I would imagine that this machine is there for a reason.

If you are using newer devices, they may not (almost certainly don't) have drivers meant for 98. You should be using a more modern OS at this point and you won't deal with these issues.Īlso, Win98 was a lot more driver specific for USB devices, including mice and keyboards.
